Be like Bre, Get Creative and DIY!

The New Normal: Life During COVID19

This is Breanne. She is from southern California and is the momma of these two sweet young girls. Bre is self-employed and works from her home office.

She was inspired to start growing food at her home during our time of quarantine. Bre’s mom Debbie is a brilliant gardener, so I’m sure that she is getting great advice on how to grow food. Visiting Debbie and her gardens is at the top of my list, but really what sparked my interest is that Bre used things that she already had around her home to create these beautiful and super practical planters.

Instead of going to Home Depot or the like, she used some extra materials from a previous home building project. These resources were shoved in the corner of the garage and all but forgotten. Because it is not as easy to jump in our cars and go buy the materials that we need, we must improvise.

The natural world greatly appreciates our improvisations. “Waste” from the construction industry is a massive problem on our planet. We extract the raw materials from Earth, use dirty energy to manufacture these raw materials, and then throw “away” up to 15% of these manufactured materials at the end of the job. This unfortunate situation happens because things were not measured or calculated correctly or a client changes their minds about a particular stone, for instance, and it does not fit the standards to reuse in another location. Then these materials are dumped in a landfill. This is a very linear, destructive way to do business, and we need to create a circular economy where there is no waste!

Be like Bre!

Look around your garage, your garden, and your house to find things that you think should just be gotten rid of or thrown “away” and get creative!

If you need suggestions or information about growing your food at home or building a compost pile, or you have a project that you would like to share!! please send me an email at sara@greenmaya.mx, and together we will come up with a plan that works best for your situation.

P.S. During this time of quarantine, it is more vital than ever that we get our daily dose of nature. Keep your distance from others but step outside, feel the breeze (or the freeze), listen for the birds, smell the air, go for a nature discovery walk if that is possible or sit under a tree with a good book and put your bare feet on the Earth.
