10 Reasons to Plan Your Next Vacation to Mérida México
You have probably heard about Tulum by now; if you haven’t, you must be living in a cave and not reading this blog! Mérida is this magical, colonial city 3 hours drive from the Caribbean coast of Tulum to the state named Yucatán. Read on to learn why you should add Merida to your vacation list.
1 European Architecture: In the centers, it can look and feel as if you are in Europe. The Spanish conquerors founded and named the city Mérida after a town in Spain around 1542.
2. Maya History- How the he** did they build these structures without the machinery and technology that we have today? The answer is easy; they were more connected to nature and the planet's natural systems. The Maya are the people who defined mathematics by coming up with the zero-based on their study of astrology. Mayan cosmology is cyclical, and everything they created was based on this practice.
3. Beaches- Simple, unspoiled white sand beaches with restaurants that sell cold beer and fresh seafood… Nothing else to say.
4. Henequen & Haciendas- Yucatan was once one of the wealthiest states in the world because the henequen plant produces a solid rope-like material. They used this to moor shipping vessels and for other household uses all over the world in the late 1800s.
5. Cool People- This is Ana. She is from a small community a half hour outside of Merida. She hosts her town’s melipona stingless bee CO-OP on her land. She also grows and raises food for her family and guests like us in her garden. Ana lives with her husband, 4-year-old daughter, and mother-in-law; they are the kindest, most humble people you will ever meet.
6. Authentic Mexican Culture- Yucatan is real Mexico. You will find some large American brands; however, you will not be in a western developed place like Cancun or Tulum. You will find authentic Mexican (Yucatecan) food, music, culture, attire, and lifestyle.
7. Art- There has always been a vibrant art scene in Merida; however, over the last eight years, the scene has grown leaps and bounds with artists from around the world. Every hip restaurant is a place to display art. You will find a variety of galleries, exhibits, chic communities, and schools for the arts. It’s a beautiful thing!
8. Churches- There is no shortage of churches to see, and you will find a unique church in every town center, some grandiose, some more basic. The religion is Catholicism; however, when you look close, you will see the Maya spiritual influences.
9. Nature - Mangrove forests border the entire coast. The Yucatan peninsula is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including the American Flamingo. They can only live in a handful of places on the planet because of the crustaceans they eat.
10. Cenotes or sinkholes connected by the world’s most extensive underground river system that was formed when the meteoroid struck Planet Earth 66+ million years ago. A not too miss excursion while in Yucatan.
