Planet, People, Profit ... In That Order.

A business that operates from the Single Bottom Line is 100% profit-driven. The motto is to grow grow grow and keep expenses as low as possible with no concern for the casualties along the way. This type of operation has been the standard, across the board, for hundreds of years.

However, there is a better way to do business, and that’s operating from the Triple Bottom Line. We use this framework as a way to measure and create a balance in operations that includes the environmental impact, the health and well-being of the people, and finally, the profit.

Planet First:

Traditional capitalism is linear, but we live in a circular world where everything is connected. 🤷‍♀️ Our natural resources are finite, and our supplies are running low. We can not continue to take from Earth without regenerating these vital resources. Extracting materials only to dispose of them in a landfill or a body of water at -end of life- is irresponsible, and definitely not sustainable.

People Next:

Employees are the backbone of a business. Without them, companies could not exist, especially the fortune 500. People must be treated with dignity, respect, and paid a living wage. Unfortunately, this is where the CEO sometimes cuts the deepest. Not Cool. You have to take care of your people, if you expect them to take care of you, that’s just common courtesy. (this includes your factory workers in far away countries)

Profit Follows:

Businesses can not afford to continue operating from the single bottom line. Due to supply and demand, natural resources are more expensive and will only continue to increase. You will not be able to pass these expenses onto the customer because the consumer post COVID19 is paying attention. The new normal has created space for a new marketplace for consumers that are seeking out transparent, socially, and environmentally responsible and progressive businesses.

When we focus on the value that our business is providing to our customers, the profit is sure to grow. Does your company have what it takes to attract and attain these new customers?

P.S. During this time of quarantine, it is more vital than ever that we get our daily dose of nature. Keep your distance from others but step outside, feel the breeze (or the freeze), listen for the birds, smell the air, go for a nature discovery walk if that is possible or sit under a tree with a good book and put your bare feet on the Earth.
