5 Spots in Latin America That Will Reconnect You With Happiness
The Green Maya Project · International Day of Happiness A guide to the region's most soul filling eco-destinations.
Today the world celebrates the International Day of Happiness. And at The Green Maya Project, we believe the deepest happiness has roots — in soil, in water, in the kind of quiet that only nature knows how to hold.
From the rainforests of Costa Rica to the sacred jungles of the Yucatán, Latin America holds some of the most magical eco-destinations on earth. Places where the land breathes. Where the Maya walked. Where the water remembers. Where the trees whisper.
I have been lucky enough to visit all of these places. They all changed me from the core. I cried tears of happiness at each of them.
Here are five that I believe belong on every conscious traveler's list.
1. Rancho Margot — Alajuela · Costa Rica
This is not just an eco-lodge—it’s a fully realized regenerative ecosystem.
Set across 400+ acres of protected rainforest, Rancho Margot is a carbon-negative sanctuary where sustainability is not a concept, but a fully integrated way of life. Every element—from energy systems to food production—is thoughtfully designed to restore the land while offering a deeply immersive, high-comfort experience.
This is where conscious travel meets quiet luxury.
Highlights
Private, open-air accommodations immersed in the jungle canopy.
Daily yoga and wellness experiences surrounded by nature.
Farm-to-table dining sourced directly from on-site organic gardens and dairy.
A network of waterfalls throughout the property—including one that feeds a natural swimming pool.
And each morning, the not so distant, grounding call of howler monkeys welcoming the day.
Wild, refined, and deeply restorative—set against the backdrop of Arenal’s lush volcanic landscape.
Best Time to Go
November–April (dry season).
Stay at least two nights—one is simply not enough—I say this from experience after staying four.
You fall asleep to the sounds of the rainforest and wake to soft light filtering through the trees.
No notifications. No urgency. No need to bother with your phone.
Just space, nature, and a level of presence that feels forgotten.
2. Black Rock Lodge Cayo District, Maya Mountains - Belize
Perched above the Macal River in the heart of the Maya Mountains, this is what it looks like when sustainability is done with care—not compromise.
Fully off-grid, powered by solar and hydro energy, and bordering the Don Elijio Panti Nature Reserve, this jungle retreat is simple, thoughtful, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Comfortable cottages are tucked into the rainforest—not overly designed, but intentionally built so that nature remains the main experience.
This isn’t about luxury—it’s about location, detail, and being in rhythm with the land.
Highlights
Comfortable, open-air cottages immersed in the jungle.
Over 390 bird species—an absolute paradise for bird lovers.
Canoe the Macal River to the Belize Botanic Gardens.
Night hikes with expert naturalists—seeing the jungle come alive in a completely different way.
Explore ancient caves once used by the Maya.
An open-air yoga palapa overlooking a waterfall.
Farm-to-table meals with ingredients grown on-site, including fresh bread baked daily.
It’s not extravagant—but every detail feels considered.
Best time
November–May is best but year round is possible
Take the early morning hike tour — it will change your perspective of the world.
The jungle sounds at night—frogs, insects, the rush of the river—are louder than any city, yet somehow they lull you to sleep.
3. Azul Nomeolvides Bacalar, Quintana Roo- Mexico
Its name means "forget-me-not blue" — which tells you everything and nothing until you actually see it. Six A-frame cabins handcrafted with local materials, fully off-grid on solar power, with a closed-loop water system. Only 5% of the land is built upon. The other 95% is exactly as nature left it.
The lagoon shifts through seven shades of blue depending on the light and depth. You wake up with the sun and sleep when it gets dark — and within about a day and a half, you realize your nervous system has reset.
Highlights
Adults-only.
No TV anywhere.
Just the water and the quiet and yourself, which turns out to be more than enough.
Best time to visit
October–April. Arrive by afternoon. Be on the dock for sunrise meditation — the water at dawn is something that doesn't photograph properly, which means you actually have to go.
The lake is every shade of blue you never knew existed. The world slows down here in a way that isn't just relaxation — it's restoration. True rest.
4. Destino Mío — Tekit, Yucatán · Mexico
I'll be honest: "mystical" is a word I use carefully, because everything is called mystical now and most of it is like a scented candle. Destino Mío earns it. A 250-hectare retreat built on a former hacienda inside the Anillo de Cenotes Geohydrological Reserve — which is a very scientific way of saying: you are surrounded by sacred Mayan land, underground rivers, and cenotes that will rearrange something in your interior.
Private cenotes.
Luxury glamping and beautifully restored hacienda accommodations.
Cacao ceremonies, temazcal, and sound baths—deep, immersive, and genuinely restorative.
A huge farm-to-table garden that nourishes every meal.
"El Ojo" — a 59-foot bamboo tower with 360° views of the jungle.
Holistic spa.
Best time to visit
Year-round. Pre-book a Mayan ceremony through The Green Maya Project. Arrive with an open heart. Leave changed.
You descend into a cenote lit only by a beam of light filtering through vines at the entrance. Something shifts in you down there that you won't be able to explain with words— it’s a feeling.
5. Earth Lodge Above Antigua- Guatemala
Treehouses and geo-domes tucked into the cloud forest above one of Latin America’s most spiritual cities.
Surrounded by lush mountains, with three volcanoes rising in the distance, this is a place where nature, culture, and ritual come together. An active Mayan shaman guides traditional ceremonies, while daily yoga, temazcal, cacao, and fire rituals create space to reconnect—without overcomplicating it.
It’s immersive, grounding, and powerful.
Highlight
Sleep in a treehouse surrounded by cloud forest.
Three volcanoes visible from the yoga deck.
Daily yoga, temazcal, cacao, and fire ceremonies led by a local Mayan shaman.
Renowned farm-to-table dining set above the clouds.
Excellent hiking and adventurous excursions.
Only 15 minutes from Antigua Guatemala—easily accessible, yet worlds apart.
Best time
October–May.
Reserve your temazcal or cacao ceremony in advance—they fill quickly.
Three volcanoes. A cacao ceremony at dusk. A Mayan shaman singing into the fire. You came to Guatemala curious. You leave knowing something you can't quite name — and that's exactly the point.
The Green Maya Project exists because we believe how we travel shapes everything— 🌿
the places we touch, the communities that receive us, and the version of ourselves we meet along the way.
These five places aren’t just beautiful. ✨
They are intentional, conscious, and alive.
Luxurious, but never disconnected from nature. 🌊
Simple, but rich in everything that actually matters.
They hold the space for you to slow down. 🕊️
To breathe differently.
To feel in your body again.
To remember what it’s like to be present—mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Because happiness isn’t something you chase. 💫
It’s something you reconnect to.
And sometimes, all it takes is the right place to remind you. 🌺
