The Spanish started appropriating the Yucatecan lands for cattle farming in the early 16th century. Some years later, they discovered a native plant, the henequén plant that could produce a robust fibre strong enough to moor shipping vessels when extracted.
With nothing on the global "market" strong enough to compete with the cord, Yucatán México quickly became one of the wealthiest regions in the world due to the demand for henequén fibres to make the ropes. The industry took over the Yucatecan lands. The cattle farms became henequén plantations, as well as much of the raw jungles of the peninsula. Grand haciendas to house the families were built by the Maya people to match the magnitude and wealth of the farms.
Unfortunately, plastic fibers eventually replaced the natural product, and the industry took a significant hit. The plantations became few and far between for many years. However, due to a worldwide demand for natural products again, the production of henequén fiber is making a come back. Local artisans and manufacturers are using natural fibers once again to make high-end luxury personal goods, home decorations, and industrial products.
On this experience, you will learn about henequén fiber production and the uses from the past to the present as you tour a working hacienda and henequén plantation. You will visit a hacienda that lays in ruin with equipment from 700+ years ago and then a restored hacienda to the splendor of the good ole days when henequén production was at its peak. Next, you will make a stop a sacred Maya cenote for a magically, refreshing swim. Finally, you'll visit a home in a local Maya community where you will have an opportunity to see a traditional henequén weaving demonstration.
