Step into a captivating world of vibrant colors, mesmerizing traditions, and profound celebrations as we embark on a journey to Mexico's heart and soul. Day of the Dead, or "Día de los Muertos," is a captivating cultural event that pays homage to loved ones who have passed away, merging joy and sorrow in an extraordinary way.
Our exclusive travel retreat invites you to immerse yourself in this rich and meaningful Mexican tradition, experiencing first-hand the magic and beauty that surround this unique festivity.
Day of the Dead is better known in Yucatán, Mexico, as Hanal Pixán, when translated from the Mayan language, means “Food for the Souls.” Both are about celebrating life and honoring the loved ones that have passed on.
The Hanal Pixán version of the nationally celebrated Mexican tradition dates back to the Mayan people and, over the years, has adapted to include some of the Catholic beliefs of the Spanish conquerors and their families who came to live in Yucatán. The Maya people believe that the soul is immortal.
Every year, from the dates October 31- to November 30, the souls of family and friends who have passed on stop by for their favorite consumables and celebrate with their living people. The main celebration (Oct 31-Nov 2) is a huge 3-day event with food, spirits, fireworks, parades, altars, over-the-top costumes, flower crowns and stunning make-up.
This is a remarkable celebration that shows how a culture embraces death with joy, reverence, and a profound understanding of life's cyclical nature.
Itinerary:
Welcome Day
October 29: The adventure begins with a welcome farm-to-fork traditional Yucatecan dinner prepared by a private chef in the gorgeous gardens of a 19th-century responsibly renovated home. After dinner, we will gather for an initiation ceremony to discuss the week ahead.
Day Two, October 30: Prepare for an extraordinary day ahead, starting at the ancient Mayan site of Mayapan, a lesser-known gem that offers a more intimate and less crowded experience compared to some other Mayan ruins. Follow your knowledgeable guide as they take you through the history and significance of the site. Marvel at the well-preserved structures, impressive pyramids, and learn about the fascinating Mayan civilization. Here we will meditate to connect with the ancestors. The energy runs deep; you will feel it.
Next, we will make our way to Ana's charming home, located in a small village just outside the city. Ana, along with her Modern Maya family, leads a fascinating life, nurturing the community Melipona bee 🐝Co-Op and cultivating an abundance of their food in their lovely home garden. The Melipona bees hold immense significance in the heart of Yucatan's history, and we'll have the privilege of understanding their important role while savoring a diverse array of their delectable honey.
In the evening, it’s all about tacos! We’ll have a variety of ingredients to choose from. Be ready to try things you’ve never heard of. Accompanying the tacos is a Mezcal Tasting. Learn about the artisanal production of Mezcal, a traditional Mexican spirit derived from the agave plant. A knowledgeable Mezcal expert will guide you through the tasting, explaining the nuances of different types and the cultural significance of this unique beverage. (we will also have mocktails)
Day Three, October 31: Embark on our day with a Guided Art Tour in the city center, where you can delve into the dynamic artistry of the Yucatan. Roam through the vibrant tapestry of the local art scene, enriched by the wisdom of a seasoned local art curator. Immerse yourself in Mexican culture and heritage as you traverse from renowned artists to the hidden gems of local creators.
After lunch and a moment of relaxation in your hotel, we'll venture into the depths of an underground cave system, uncovering the secrets of the world's largest subterranean river system. In this mesmerizing realm, we'll discuss the ancient ceremonies once conducted by the most esteemed figures in Mayan history, a truly enlightening experience.
Following the cave exploration, our journey will lead us to an enchanting cenote – a natural sinkhole brimming with crystal clear and invigorating water. Here, a night swim beneath the starlit expanse awaits, accompanied by an enthralling sound bath ritual.
Amid this captivating setting, you'll be treated to a culinary masterpiece personally prepared by a local grandmother, a connoisseur in the realm of traditional Mayan gastronomy. It's an honor to savor the flavors she skillfully weaves into a homemade meal, adding a heartfelt touch to your experience.
Day Four, November 1: Embarking on a morning adventure, we venture beyond the city's boundaries and into the realm of a third-generation local Maya man. This particular land once served as the grounds for henequen farms, worked by families of old. Within its borders lies a cemetery, a sacred place dedicated to honoring the departed. As we delve into the history of this land and immerse ourselves in the enchantment of the Yucatan jungle, the hospitable locals will reveal the secrets of preparing a traditional dish called PIBES, a delicacy unique to this time of year, in an underground oven and the sweet pan de muerto for lunch.
Should our schedule allow, we shall journey through the yellow streets of Izamal, where we can explore, learn, and unravel the tapestry of history and culture of this important town.
We'll return to your hotel, where you can take some time to rest and recharge. Freshen up and get ready for an evening of enchantment as we make our way to the heart of Merida for sightseeing, ghost hunting, and dinner on the town.
Day Five, November 2: In the morning, we commence our day with a special ceremony led by a revered shaman, paying deep respect to our ancestors. The timeless rituals passed down through generations, are skillfully woven together, and there's a chance that you might connect with a departed loved one.
Following the powerful ceremony, we'll take the afternoon to rest and contemplate its significance. If you wish, a talented local artist will be available to paint your face for the evening of the Day of the Dead celebrations. Remember, it remains a respectful and cherished tradition as long as it's not worn on Halloween.
As the afternoon closes, we'll make our way to the heart of Merida, where the Gran Plaza plays host to a captivating Day of the Dead altar exhibit. Here, you will witness the essence of Hanal Pixan brought to life before your eyes. Strolling through the downtown area on foot, you'll experience the vibrant energy as the city comes alive, paying tribute to the spirits of the departed. The main church, which was built using stones from ancient Maya cities, will be lit up and quite a sight to see. It’s an exciting evening of celebration.
As night falls, the vibrant celebrations commence, featuring a grand parade with painted faces, beautifully adorned altars, glowing candles, captivating performers, and characters on stilts, all culminating in a solemn walk to the cemetery.
Day Six, November 3 Before bidding farewell, our morning will commence with a refreshing and invigorating experience. We'll welcome the sunrise with a gentle yoga session, incorporating light breath work and the Wim Hoff method to awaken your senses and remind you of the vitality coursing through your veins.
