Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant and deeply meaningful Mexican tradition rooted in both Indigenous and Catholic beliefs. Far from a somber occasion, it’s a celebration of life—where we honor our ancestors, welcome their spirits home, and keep their memories alive through altars, food, music, and ritual.
It’s said that during this time, the veil between worlds grows thin, inviting us to reconnect with those who came before us and reflect on the sacred cycle of life and death.
This retreat is for anyone moving through grief, transition, or emotional exhaustion—whether from a breakup, the loss of a loved one, burnout, or simply the weight of the world right now.
This isn’t about escaping your grief—it’s about honoring it.
Itinerary:
Day 1 – Arrival & Welcome
Arrive and settle into a beautifully restored private hacienda surrounded by nature. We’ll kick off the experience with welcome margaritas (non-alcoholic options available) and a dinner curated by a recognized local chef, introducing the rich flavors of Yucatán.
Day 2 – Altars, Ancestry & Community
We begin the day with a nourishing breakfast lovingly prepared by local women, grounding our taste buds in the flavors and warmth of Yucatán.
We’ll begin the day with a meaningful Day of the Dead initiation ceremony led by Abuela Mónica, a respected Maya spiritual guide. You’ll learn the traditions of ancestral altars, and together, we’ll create our own—each person invited to bring a photo, letter, or small object that represents their grief. This is a sacred time to reflect, reconnect, and honor what you carry.
In the afternoon, we’ll attend the vibrant Festival del Pib in San Sebastián—a once-a-year tradition centered around food, family, and honoring the dead through a local dish.
Later, we’ll head to Mérida’s Gran Plaza, where the city comes alive with color, candles, and reverence. We’ll visit heartfelt altar exhibits, museums, the historic Casa de Montejo, and the central church.
As night falls, the cathedral transforms with a stunning video mapping display—a visual tribute to Hanal Pixán and the sacred spirit of the season. We’ll close the day with dinner in the city, sharing stories, connection, and the feeling of being held by something greater.
Day 3 – Sacred Sites & Ancestral Traditions
After breakfast, we depart early for an ancient Mayan archaeological site, where a local expert will guide us through its history. Among the ruins, we’ll pause for a breathwork meditation, opening ourselves to the wisdom held in the stones and listening for the subtle messages of our ancestors and spirit guides.
Then it’s off to Campeche for fresh seafood by the Gulf of Mexico, with dietary options available for everyone.
We’ll then visit the town of Pomuch to witness a rare and deeply intimate tradition: the annual cleaning of the bones of deceased loved ones. It’s a powerful expression of love, memory, and the living relationship between generations.
We return to the hacienda in the evening for a swim, rest, and a light dinner under the stars.
Day 4 – Reflection, Ritual & Paseo de las Ánimas
Spend the morning and afternoon however you need—resting, swimming, journaling, or simply soaking in the hacienda's peaceful surroundings. This free time is yours to integrate everything you’ve experienced so far.
For lunch, we’ll visit a local taco spot nearby—simple, delicious, and authentically Yucatecan.
As night falls, we’ll take part in Paseo de las Ánimas, or “Walk of Souls”—a candlelit procession from the General Cemetery to Parque de San Juan. Faces are painted, altars glow with candles, marigolds, and memories, and the streets come alive! This powerful ritual invites us to walk with the spirits and honor those we’ve lost. (Optional face painting)
An evening of enchantment as we make our way to the heart of Merida for sightseeing, ghost-hunting, and dinner on the town.
Day 5 – Healing Waters & Sacred Bees
We begin the day with a nourishing breakfast at the hacienda before heading to a sacred, secluded cenote. In this natural sanctuary, you’ll experience a deeply restorative sound bath session led by a local wellness guide. As you float in crystal-clear waters, the vibrations move through your body, inviting stillness, clarity, and renewal. Afterward, there’s time to swim, swing, or simply soak in the healing embrace of nature.
Next, we’ll visit Doña Ana and her family to learn about the sacred Melipona bees—gentle, stingless pollinators revered in Maya tradition for their medicinal gifts. You’ll enjoy a heartfelt connection over a home-cooked lunch prepared with love in their warm, welcoming kitchen.
Back at the hacienda, the evening is yours. Rest, journal, or reflect in quiet solitude. Dinner is on your own—choose to stay in and unwind or explore Merida’s many flavors and nighttime energy.
Day 6 Closing Circle
We begin the day with a gentle sunrise moving meditation—a final moment to connect with your breath, your body, and the rising sun.
From there, the day unfolds at your own pace —whether that looks like journaling under the tree, napping in your hammock, or maybe you’d like to visit the city one last time. (last-minute gifts?)
You’ll have the option to schedule a one-on-one session with one of your retreat hosts for personalized support on how to carry your healing into daily life.
You may also choose to enjoy a therapeutic massage to nourish your body.
As evening falls, we’ll come together for a heartfelt farewell dinner. We'll share stories, laughter, and maybe a few tears as we celebrate the journey we’ve taken and the soul connections that now feel like family.
