Are you sleeping with the enemy?

Home Detox The Green Maya Project

Do you or a family member suffer from allergies or asthma? You might be sleeping with the enemy. People and pets shed enough dead skin cells in a day to each feed a million dust mites. These microscopic pests eat your dead skin and love the moist, humid environment of your bed after a good 7 hours of sleep. We cannot see them without a superpower vision or a microscope. Warning: Do not google their image! The presence of dust mites will not kill you, but they can trigger allergic reactions when inhaled. In severe cases, the response may lead to an asthma attack.

  • You’ve probably never heard this before, but don’t make your bed right away when you wake up. Shake out and throw back the sheets and blankets, fluff the pillows, and let it stay open for an hour or just before you need to leave. Open windows and turn on fans to move the stale air out and bring in the fresh air.

  • Wash your bedding weekly in hot water with laundry detergent that does not contain perfumes, chemicals, or color additives to ensure the removal of allergen build-up. Don’t forget the pillowcases.

  • Purchase hypoallergenic bedding made from bamboo or organic cotton to keep the mold and mites away.

  • When the time is right, after ten years, and it’s time to buy a new mattress, make the investment and purchase an eco mattress and pillows made from natural latex. Do not purchase memory foam; mold grows easily in this material, and even worse, it off-gasses toxic fumes for at least a year.

  • Keep the doggies out of your beds. I know, who doesn’t love a good snuggle from fido? But that guy is carrying around who knows what on his feet and fur. Purchase a bed for your four-legged family members, and be sure to vacuum it once a week to keep his dust and dander at bay.

  • Dust and allergens like to hide in places like under the top of your bed. A good quality vacuum with a HEPA filter is the best tool for getting in those hard to reach areas.

  • Be sure to dust all surfaces with a damp microfiber every week to keep dust build-up under control.

  • Air conditioners do an excellent job of sucking up everything in the air; it’s a good idea to clean the filters once a month with soap and water. The same goes for ceiling fans; it’s a common area for the build-up of particulates from the air.

  • Use bedside rugs made from cotton, bamboo, or any natural fiber to wipe feet before entering the bed. This is especially important for kids; they don’t tend to care if they have chunks of dirt from the garden or the flower pollen that they are allergic to in their bed!

  • If you like the sexy ambient of candles, make sure they are made of beeswax or soy-based with naturally derived fragrance. Use aromatherapy with essential oils for pleasant, relaxing smells in your bedroom.
