Does your kitchen have some dirty little secrets?
That is an excellent question, but obviously, you had no idea that your favorite all-purpose cleaning spray has pesticides as an ingredient! I wrote about this in a previous post, “How well do you know your products?”. We can not trust brands at face value; you have to do your research if you want to know the truth.
If you are not buying organic, you should be thinking about the chemicals that your food is exposed to before it arrives on your plate. GMO seeds, herbicides, pesticides, and antibiotics, to name a few. You do have options; for instance, you can buy directly from the farmer or grow your own to be 100% sure of what you are eating. Read labels religiously and ask uncle Google to define the words that you don’t know.
The kitchen is the heart of your home; even if takeout and freezer meals are your thing, you are still being exposed to your kitchen’s dirty little secrets. If you are heating your food in a microwave, please stop. Microwaves zap all the nutrients from your food, plastic leaches into your food, and the technology is bad for the planet. Recycle the outdated machine and warm your food on the stove or in a toaster oven.
Speaking of heating something on the stove, be sure to use stainless steel or cast iron pots for cooking your food. Non-stick Teflon makes clean-up easier, but unfortunately, the non-stick chemical coating breaks down into dust size particles that you eat and inhale into our lungs.
We are getting to a time where there is more plastic than dirt on Planet Earth. Single-use plastics for bottled water, take away food, grocery bags, straws, etc., must be stopped. Plastic breaks down into tiny, microscopic pieces. It’s in our air, it’s in our food, and it’s in our water. Plastic is a toxic chemical that is causing havoc to our bodies and the natural world. Just say NO to plastic.
Ah, Yes, your water, you should have a filter, at least for your drinking and cooking needs. Filters remove calcium, chlorine, pesticides, heavy metals, nitrates, and other pollutants from your water. Something that you can plan or save for would be a whole home water filter. This type of filter stops the contamination from entering your home, period.
Dirty, wet countertops and sponges offer the best living conditions for bacteria such as E.Coli. Clean the countertops with all-purpose, non-toxic spray, and a damp cloth after every meal. Wash the sponges in the dishwasher or clothes washer with hot water frequently. If you refuse to give up your microwave, you can put the sponges in for 30 seconds, and it will kill all the bacteria and germs that have been collected.
